In 1921, Carl August Borgström founded AB Urfabriken beside the Mörrum River in Svängsta, Sweden. The company began by producing pocket watches, telephone timers, and taxi meters, drawing on Borgström’s experience in precision watchmaking and light mechanical engineering.
As demand for its original instruments declined during World War II, ABU redirected those precision skills toward fishing reels. That change established the foundation for a line of products that would eventually include the Ambassadeur reel, spinning reels, low-profile baitcasters, fishing rods, and rod-and-reel combos.
